Traction duty Inductor

Traction duty inductors are specially designed dry-type reactors with an iron core. Since these are fitted inside locomotives, the significant challenge in design of these inductors is compactness in size and weight. Lower weight and volume is achieved at the cost of increased losses and, in turn, higher temperatures. This is overcome by use of insulation which can deal with higher temperatures without failure.

When fitted, these inductors perform following functions:

  1. Limit initial rate of rise of current for DC fault close to the traction substation
  2. Reduce harmonic current flowing to the overhead wiring

Reasons why present traction duty inductors are the best suitable option:

  1. Dry-type, Iron core
  2. Foil / strip wound
  3. Aluminium / ound
  4. Class H insulation to withstand harsh environmental conditions
  5. Naturally cooled/ forced cooling (as per requirement)
  6. Compact design (for fitting inside locomotives)
  7. Resistance to heavy vibrations generating from traction.
  8. Withstanding heavy harmonics generating due to inverter/IGBT spectrum
  9. Maintenance-free, fully static equipment
  10. Robust and sturdy design incorporated with special protective surface treatment
